Tips For Buying Used Kid’s Bikes on Craigslist
Are you a parent who would like to buy a bicycle for your child, but are you also shopping on a strict budget? If so, you may need to opt for a used bike instead. One of the best places to turn to is Craigslist.org; depending on the size of your city or town, you can easily find hundreds of bikes for sale.
Here are some helpful shopping and search tips:
Make sure you are looking at a kid’s bike. Although it is easy to tell that most bicycles are for children, due to their small size, verify. You will start with a search; even if you use the phrases “kids bike,” you will get lots of postings for adult bikes. These slip through the cracks and not all sellers write “kids bike,” in their headline either. The price can also be a good indicator, as bicycles for adults are more expensive.
If you are not comfortable taking your child with you to look at the bike, get a few measurements from them first. Do these measurements with your child wearing the shoes they are likely to ride with. Measure the outside of their legs and in inseam. Take your measuring tape with you to look at the bike. You want to ensure your child can comfortably use the pedals and reach the ground when the seat is adjusted to the lowest or highest position. With that said, if you find a really great deal on a bike that you know your child will grow into soon, still consider buying it to store in the garage until then.
See if you can get a free helmet or knee pads tossed into. You might be surprised how many parents theme their children’s accessories to their bike design or color. These parents are likely to buy a whole new set of accessories when opting for a new bike. Plus, pads and helmets are things that kids outgrow. Lot of Craigslist sellers will automatically toss in a free helmet, but don’t be afraid to ask either.
If your child is a toddler or preschooler, it is best to look for kids bikes with training wheels. Don’t pressure your young child to ride a two-wheeled bike just because you were able to find a good one listed on Craigslist. Training wheels can be purchased separately and installed, you can look for a bike with training wheels, or you can just store that bike until your child is ready for two-wheels only. Also note that not all Craigslist sellers refer to bikes for toddlers as bicycles; they are commonly referred to as trikes and you should keep this in mind when searching for a big wheel.
